Belgium: Palms for the Occupation of Rhineland. 
Rare and unofficial veteran’s decoration awarded 
to members of the Belgian Army who served in 
the Allied occupation of the Rhineland following 
WWI (and later WWII).
The Palms version is the scarcest among the 
related Rhineland occupation awards.
The Allied occupation of the Rhineland took place 
following the armistice that ended WW1 in 1918. 
The occupying armies consisted of American, 
Belgian, British and French forces. 
The Belgian Army of Occupation consisted of 5 
Divisions stationed in Krefeld (Headquarters at 
Aachen).
Following the end of WW2, Germany was divided 
by the Allied Forces, into several occupational 
zones (4 Major zones and 3 Minor zones). 
The Belgian zone was formed as a corridor from 
the Belgian-German border to the edge of the 
Soviet zone, and it included the important town 
of Cologne. 
The Belgian Army of Occupation, the Belgian 
Forces in Germany (FBA-BSD), was formed by 
soldiers of the former Free Belgian Forces.
Commanded by General Jean-Baptiste Piron it 
remained under British operational command 
until 1946.
