Ethiopia Medal for the Ethiopian UN Mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo 1960 1964

Ethiopia: UN Congo Mission Medal (1960–1964) 
awarded to personnel who served in the United 
Nations Operation in the the Democratic Republic 
of the Congo (ONUC). The medal was instituted 
by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1965 to honor 
Ethiopian peacekeepers’ contribution to one 
of the first major UN peacekeeping missions in 
Africa.

ONUC was the UN's first peacekeeping mission 
with significant military capabilities and was 
initially deployed in the country to ensure the 
withdrawal of the Belgian colonial forces and 
to provide internal stability. 
In the face of worsening security conditions its 
mandate gradually expanded to include 
protecting the territorial integrity and political 
independence of the Congo, preventing an 
impending civil war, and securing the removal 
of all unauthorized foreign armed forces. 
During the period 1960-1964, approx. 3.500 
troops of the Ethiopian Kebur Zabagna (the 
Imperial Guard) together with an Air Force 
squadron served with the ONUC in the Congo. 
The Ethiopian forces formed the "Tekil" (or 
"Tekel") Brigade which was stationed in 
Stanleyville.
