FRANCE: Societies for Mutual Aid, Bronze Medal.
Signed by the medalist Louis Oscar Roty (1846-
1911).
The medal was established in 1852 but its public
wear was permitted in 1898.
The award was authorized by the Ministry of
Labor and Social Providence in order to reward
exceptional services by members of the various
"Societies for Mutual Aid" (Philanthropic bodies/
societies that were providing assistance to the
unemployed and sick, in the time prior of the
establishment of the State Social Security
system).
