as Commemorative War Medal of 1840. 
The medal was instituted in 1840.  Was awarded 
for wartime service in the campaigns of 1780–
1815 (Napoleonic Wars), 1848–49 (German 
revolutions) and 1866 (Austro-Prussian War). 
Struck in cannon bronze, this early German 
campaign medal was discontinued in 1866. 
A rare and historic piece of pre-unification 
German military history.
