Machine Gun Company, 31st Infantry Regiment 
"Graf Bose" (1st of Thuringia). Identified by 
shoulder insignia and handwritten description 
on reverse. Notable signs in the image read: 
"Reserve Hat Ruhe" (Rest in the Reserve) and 
"Nach der Heimat" (To the Homeland – Back 
Home), indicating it was likely taken on the 
day of discharge. 
Taken in Hamburg-Altona, in 1911, this large-
format photo on hard cardstock is a poignant 
and rare piece of German military history.
