Ethiopia UN Service Medal Derg Era 1974 1991

Ethiopia: United Nations Service Medal of Ethiopia, 
instituted in 1980 by Mengistu Haile Mariam during 
the Derg regime (1977–1991). 
The obverse features the UN emblem with
inscription “United Nations Service Medal” in 
Amharic. 
It was awarded to Ethiopian personnel that served 
in international humanitarian or peacekeeping 
missions under the United Nations mandate.
The Medal (with different ribbon) had also been 
awarded to non-Ethiopian UN workers who 
responded to the drought and famine in Ethiopia, 
mainly in food, water and aid distribution, during 
the 1990's. 
For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the 
"Famine Medal".
A scarce Derg-era military decoration.
