Ethiopia: WW2 Commemorative Medal for the 
40th Anniversary of the Victory over Italy (1941–
1981). 
Established in 1981 by Mengistu Haile Mariam 
during the Derg regime (1977–1991). 
Also known as the “Medal for Unforgettable 
Achievement”, the obverse bears the Amharic 
inscription “Unforgettable Achievement” and 
the date 1933 (AD 1941).
It was awarded to the surviving veterans of the 
Ethiopian Resistance (Arbegnoch) who fought 
against the Italian Occupation (1936-1941) and 
assisted the Allied East African campaign (also 
known as the Abyssinian Campaign) between 
Jun. 1940 and Nov. 1941, that forced the Italian 
forces in the region to surrender following the 
Battle of Gondar in Nov. 1941.
The medal is rare.
