Imperial Germany - Hesse Darmstadt: Military
Medical Cross 1914 on rare ribbon for non
military volunteers.
The Military Medical Cross was originally
established by Ludwig III in 1870.
Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig revived it in 1914 for
the Great War.
As in 1870, it was awarded to men or women
regardless of rank who had distinguished
themselves through meritorious service in the
medical corps, particularly in the care and
transport of wounded and sick soldiers. It was
also stipulated that medical officers and active
military personnel would receive the cross on
the ribbon of the Bravery Medal.
